We have a great opportunity for an Aboriginal Service & Engagement Officer to join our dedicated team based onsite at Parklea Correctional Centre.
ABOUT YOUR NEW ROLE
The Aboriginal Service & Engagement Officer provides high-quality, culturally tailored welfare support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inmates at Parklea Correctional Centre (PCC). This role focuses on the pro-social engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, their welfare, and cultural needs. The engagement and services aim to ultimately prepare inmates for successful reintegration.
In your new role, you will:
Welfare Monitoring: Conduct welfare checks within 5 business days of newly received Aboriginal inmates to ensure immediate needs are met (physical, emotional, cultural).
Inmate Support Services: Inform inmates about available services in an accessible and culturally appropriate manner. Manage welfare referrals as assigned and respond to inmate inquiries promptly and in line with defined procedures.
Cultural Mentorship: Provide ad-hoc culturally sensitive support and mentorship to Aboriginal inmates, ensuring they feel safe and supported within the correctional environment, while supporting formal culturally specific programs delivered by external providers.
Program Delivery: support the delivery of mentoring, relevant cultural and reintegration programs aimed at preparing First Nations inmates for successful post-release transitions. This includes the coordination of relevant cultural events and workshops.
Pre-Release Coordination: Work with Throughcare Coordinators to assist in pre-release support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inmates where required.
Record Keeping: Case note all interactions and activities in the Offender Information Management System (OIMS) and log all activities in the Purposeful Activity or Daily Attendance Spreadsheet for tracking and reporting purposes.
ABOUT YOU
You are experienced in managing welfare services and supporting the needs of vulnerable populations with complex needs, skilled in engaging with groups through structured presentations. You possess a strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices, demonstrating empathy, cultural sensitivity, and inclusiveness. Your proven ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including community organisations, inmates, and staff, is complemented by your experience in outcome-driven environments where results are closely monitored and reported.
To be successful, you will:
Qualifications: Tertiary qualification in social work, criminology, or Certificate IV in Community Services, or equivalent experience.
Gain and retain all police/security clearances required within our industry.
Pass any required health assessments.
Work within an immigration centre.
Travel interstate when required to meet business needs.
Provide proof of double vaccination against Covid-19 with a vaccine recognised in Australia.
Undergo alcohol and drug testing as required by the business.
